Summer-long festival combines music and activities.

Brooklyn's known for being hip. Artists and performers are drawn to it. And fans are drawn to them. Located in the Prospect Park bandshell, the events, opportunities and shows offer a diverse slate of entertinament. Among the attractions: The "Music and "Movies" series, which pairs iconic films (projected onto the festivals huge outdoor screen) with live music performances. A 35th anniversary screening of "Saturday Night Fever" (Tony Manero costumes welcome!) will get an opening from Bee Gees tribute band Tragedy on (July 14). Balloon Festival: Patch Will Send You Into the Sky

Event celebrates its 30th season.

When is a balloon festival not (just) a balloon festival? That’s a tough question, especially when a huge yearly event is billed as such (I mean, it's called the Festival of Ballooning, after all) and there certainly are plenty of hot-air balloons to be displayed. Still, the Quick Chek Festival of Ballooning—in its 30th year, running from July 27 through 29 at Solberg Airport in Readington—is also part amusement park, with a healthy number of rides, an arts-and-crafts emporium, a yoga and Zumba demonstration, and lots and lots of food. Of the 30 years, Quick Chek has been a major sponsor for 20. And for the first time, Patch is partnering with the festival to get you in at a great price. Between May 13 and 20, use this link to buy tickets …

If you want a FREE close up time with the ballon, or a ballon, go to the 6:00 AM launch, but don't go into the festival. Then pick a special ballon and chase it. It will land someplace that is close to a road. The balloon people are more than happy to have you there.   more ›

Comedy, Music & Lots of Sondheim on Stage

Area theater lovers can see two shows by the legendary composer in the coming weeks

The works of Stephen Sondheim are among the most challenging in theater, but the great composer obviously isn't intimidating area theater groups. Dover Little Theater is currently staging "Company," Sondheim's groundbreaking 1970 classic about a single man in three relationships. The show is known as one of the first that deals with realistic adult themes, and features such songs as "Being Alive." Meanwhile, The Barn Theatre will present "Assassins," with a run opening May 18. The 1990 musical is about the men and women who either assassinated, or tried to assassinate, presidents of the United States. And even if you don't like Sondheim, there's bound to be something for everyone on a stage near you, from "Cabaret," to "Southern Comforts" …

Blues Hall of Fame Calls Hopatcong Man

Radio personality 'Uncle Pete' Hoff has been showcasing the music he loves for several years.

A Hopatcong man has carved himself a place among blues greats. "Uncle Pete" Hoff was recently notified he'd be inducted into the New Jersey Chapter of the American Heritage Blues Hall of Fame. Hoff, 57, has hosted the two-hour "Uncle Pete's Blues Party" Sundays on WNTI 91.9 FM of Hackettstown, featuring blues acts big and small, for the past two years and has been on the air for about four and a half. Hoff said he wouldn't look at the honor as a crowning achievement, but as a way to expand his reach and to showcase more of the music he loves. "It feels very good I have to tell you," he said. "But I take it in not a way like a lifetime achievement award … but I guess it helps the profile of the show get bigger and bigger. "It's really just …

There are also comedy acts, dance performances and children's shows headed our way. And some audition opportunities too. Read your trusty On Stage Scoop every …
