FDU Poll: Fox, MSNBC Don't Inform You Well

Says Sunday morning news shows seem to do the best keeping people informed

What channel do you surf to, when you want to get caught up on the news? According to the latest poll from Fairleigh Dickinson University's PublicMind, if it's Fox News or MSNBC, you might not be learning much. You're much better off with a Sunday morning news show or with NPR if you really want to know what's going on in the world, the poll concludes. See the full statement from FDU below, and take Patch's poll at the bottom of this post to let us know what you think. According to a follow-up survey by Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind, NPR and Sunday morning political talk shows are the most informative news outlets, while exposure to partisan sources, such as Fox News and MSNBC, has a negative impact on people’s current events…

Oh, so many methodological criticisms of this study, at least as it is reported here. A threshold issue is how many people today get all of their news from so-called Main Stream Media of the type discussed here? There are many web sites which supplement/supplant MSM. With regard to the study itself, how do you distinguish between an issue on which someone was misinformed, and one that they didn't…   more ›

Struble Gardens a 'Dream of Ours,' Owners Say

After years of landscaping, brothers hope adding a garden center to their business will help establish them in Hopatcong.

Lester Struble didn't hesitate to answer as his younger brother, Michael, sat nodding to his left. "I would say this has been a dream of ours," he said. "It's nice to see it come to fruition." Struble Gardens opened on Lakeside Boulevard a little over a week ago—just in time for the spring and summer booms. And as it prepares for its grand opening May 5-6, it has an eye toward the future, the older brother said. "We want to be here for a long time," Lester Struble said. The Struble brothers, who grew up in West Milford, each studied horticulture at Delaware Valley College in Pennsylvania before opening up a landscaping business, based out of Ledgewood, in 1998. Lester Struble said the pair specializes in high-end residential landscaping, …

JCP&L Boasts Improved Power Outage Maps

Utility company says new maps will also be available via smart phone and other mobile devices.

FirstEnery Corp., which operates Jersey Central Power & Light, launched new maps on its website Thursday that will allow New Jersey residents to search for power outages by state, county and zip code. The Ohio-based utility company said in a release that the new color-coded maps include links to allow customers to report service interruptions and provide tables showing county-by-county outage totals. FirstEnergy added that the maps are accessible via smart phones and other mobile devices. The maps also boast prominent alerts with links to outage-related news, safety reminders and other information, FirstEnergy said. Later in the year, the maps are expected to include more detailed estimated restoration time during large-scale weather …

Latest Farmers Market Addition? Alpacas!

No, you won't be able to ride them.

The borough released this list a while back of vendors planning to participate in Hopatcong's farmers market Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. from June 17 to Sept. 30 in the municipal building parking lot. The latest—and maybe coolest—addition? Alpacas, according to Councilman Mike Francis. Francis said at Wednesday's board of health meeting that the animals, which look like small llamas, "will probably be staked" to the ground. Parking for the farmers market, by the way, will be at the Department of Public Works.
