Put on your seat belt. That is, unless you want a ticket. The Click It Or Ticket program started Monday in Hopatcong, with borough patrols going on extra twice-a-day, four-hour shifts aimed at "zero-tolerance enforcement of saftey belt laws," according to the state website. The program, which will end June 3, will be funded via a $4,000 grant. On Saturday, Hopatcong released these tips for drivers.

J. Michael Adams has been on medical leave since October.
Fairleigh Dickinson University President J. Michael Adams announced Wednesday he would step down in June after ongoing medical issues have made it impossible for him to lead the school. Adams, 64, has been on medical leave since October while undergoing treatment for myelodysplastic syndrome, which impacts bone marrow and impairs blood production. In a message to the university, Adams said he was later diagnosed with a cancer known as acute myeloid leukemia. “Since I was named president 13 years ago, I have done everything I could to serve our amazing students. The opportunity to work with all of you has been the greatest joy of my professional life. However, I have reluctantly concluded that my continuing medical issues make it impossible…
And why Danielle Kovach's teaching career started with stuffed animals and her closet.
Danielle Kovach always wanted to be a teacher. Always. The 2010-2011 New Jersey Teacher of the Year remembered in the clip above the time, back in grade school, when she lined all her stuffed animals alphabetically and, using her closet as a chalkboard, treated them like her students. It's that passion that has served Kovach so well over the years and came to a head just less than two years ago when she received the statewide honor. In the interview, the Tulsa Trail School special-education teacher talks about how Acting Commissioner of Education Chris Cerf, Superintendent Dr. Charles Maranzano and interim Principal Joseph Memoli surprised her with the honor. The video above also takes a peek into Kovach's classroom.

Dr. Charles Maranzano Jr. is tasked with a big job. The superintendent runs a school district in blue-collar Hopatcong. State aid has been cut drastically over the years. Raucous—and fun—night captured in pair of clips.
What, exactly, are Wonderwaffles? Well, obviously, they're close friends Ben Colabella and Dillon Del Rosso, Hopatcong High School seniors who rocked Hopatcong Idol Thursday night. The pair not only had the courage to get on stage and belt out one of their favorite tunes—Foster The People's "Pumped Up Kicks"—but they even put their own borough twist on the last verse, sending the crowd into a frenzy of cheers and claps. Check out the video above. And don't forget to soak in classmate Scott Lewis singing "Bloom" while playing guitar, which we've also posted above.

New Jersey Arts Education Census Project surveys nearly all schools to compare arts education offerings.
A statewide survey of arts education programs in New Jersey schools to be released Thursday finds a correlation between schools with more arts education programs and greater proficiency scores on the language sections of the state's High School Proficiency Assessment. The report is a follow-up to one conducted in 2007, and is a joint project of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, the state Department of Education, Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, New Jersey Arts Education Partnership, ArtPride New Jersey Foundation, and Quadrant Arts Education Research. The report compiled survey responses from about 99 percent of the schools asking for information on as many as 26 different areas, such as the number of arts teachers and class …

Just in line with statewide English scores, but just behind in math, U.S. News & World Report says.
Hopatcong High School students are about as proficient in English as those statewide, but have fallen just behind their counterparts in math, according to a U.S. News & World Report released this week. The study ranked almost 22,000 public high school from every state except Nebraska, which didn't report enough data, and the District of Columbia. The study focused on state assessments—in New Jersey's case, the High School Proficeny Assessment, or HSPA—and student success in college-level courses. The rankings also listed the top 51 high schools in each state. Hopatcong did not crack the list. The study said 88 percent of 179 Hopatcong students tested were at least proficient in English while the rest were only partially proficient. And on …
