With Thursday's win over Newton, the Chiefs have chance to win NJAC Freedom crown outright for first league title since 1998.
They are the champions. Hopatcong High School's baseball team clinched a share its first league championship since 1998 Thursday, dropping Newton, 4-0, at the Homer Dome for a Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference Freedom Division crown. The Chiefs (12-7) would take the crown outright with a win over Kittatinny Wednesday. Adam McLagan scored the go-ahead run in the top of the fifth, legging out the back end of a double-steal. Frank Fendrock's two-run double in the seventh helped open things up for Hopatcong, which received scoreless pitching from senior Dillon DelRosso and sophomore Ryan Frace (3-2). Senior first baseman Ray Annett went 3-for-4 and Rick Prestifilippo knocked a two-bagger.

Chiefs honor Crystal Mastreoni during senior day Thursday.
Hopatcong has had a stellar season, amassing a 12-7 record despite missing out on a chance at a Northwest Athletic Division Conference crown with Thursday's 4-0 loss to Kittatinny at home. But the Chiefs still had reason to smile. Hopatcong honored sole senior Crystal Mastreoni, a second baseman, inviting her family onto the field and thanking her for her service.

Hopatcong's best golfer in years had pick of strong programs, decides to stay close to home.
One of Hopatcong High School's brightest golf star will continue his career past graduation. Shane Sickles signed a letter of intent to join Division III Fairleigh Dickinson's program recently. The senior has been a Chiefs stalwart, earning three straight team most valuable player awards while captaining the squad for two seasons and grabbing a pair of first-team Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference nods. Sickles also drew attention from Felician College, Eckerd College and Adams State College, Athletic Director Tom Vara said. Sickles nabbed a seventh-place finish in the Huterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament last season. Sickles joins Hunter Guard and Austin Brown as Chiefs to commit to playing college sports. Guard chose to head to Moravian …

Hopatcong two-way star looks to bolster to Division II program.
Austin Brown will be taking his talents to Pennsylvania. The Hopatcong High School linebacker signed a letter of intent recently to play football at Division II East Stroudsberg University. The four-year starter shined at fullback and linebacker for the Chiefs. Brown earned a plethora of recognition while at Hopatcong. The two-year captain captured a pair of first-team Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference nods, two Hopatcong High School most valuable player awards and was selected to play in the East-West All-Star game. Brown was also named a Hopatcong Patch "Whiz Kid" and "Chief of the Week" in 2011. Click here to see a highlight video of some of Brown's best moments. Want to congratulate Brown? New proposal could give Chiefs a better chance at reaching the playoffs.
Beginning this fall, 160 high school football teams around the state will have the opportunity to win a state sectional championship, under a proposal approved by the NJSIAA this afternoon. The NJSIAA Executive Committee approved the proposal to create a Group V designation in the four public school sections by a vote of 22-5-3 at its meeting in Robbinsville, according to Jack DuBois, NJSIAA assistant director who's in charge of football. "This creates a greater opportunity for schools and for student-athletes," DuBois said. "It increases the number of teams playing in the playoffs from 128 to 160. At the same time, it eliminates 16 consolation games that schools didn't want to play anyway." Hopatcong High School athletic director Tom Vara…

Capwell, Olugbenga lead Chiefs to another flawless season.
The Hopatcong High School boys track team isn't perfect. But try telling that to the standings. The Chiefs finished their third straight undefeated season Thursday with a road win over formidable Newton. The victory gave Hopatcong a 6-0 finish and its third consecutive Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference Freedom Division crown. "It's a good feeling," senior sprinter Feyi Olugbenga said. Hopatcong has won its last 20 dual meets with a cast of state-level talent and hard-training athletes. And in the past 26 years head coach Mike Juskus has been at the helm, the Chiefs have recorded 20 winning seasons. "Buying into the system" has helped Hopatcong maintain its winning ways, Juskus said. "I try to teach the kids that it's positivity, …

The junior snaps a 16-year Hopatcong High School mark.
Make room for a new name in the Hopatcong High School girls track record books. Junior sprinter Courtney Macaluso snapped the school's 100-meter dash record Monday, recording a 12.7. Danielle Stoveken set the old mark of 12.8 in 1996. Macaluso enters Wednesday's dual meet against Newton—the Chiefs' last of the season—undefeated in the 100 and the 200-meter dash, despite missing one meet due to injury. "She is our best sprinter, no doubt about it," girls head coach Peter Oesen said. "When put into the individual events, she competes at a high level. "She's got a tremendous ability and, you know, it's not a surprise that she broke the record. She runs all winter long and goes to meets in the winter time even though the school does not have a…

Hopatcong's football star consulted those closest to him before making the biggest decision of his life.
It was late, and inside it was loud. The downstairs living room, filled with family and close friends, had grown from a chatty gathering to a party where the conversations were boisterous and predicated on the same question: Where was he going? Outside, the family talked. Because for Joe Martinek to do this, it had to be the same way he made his last life-changing decision—the choice to take a full Rutgers football scholarship after leaving Hopatcong High School as the state's all-time leading rusher. He needed his family's advice. So when the discussion ended and they walked into the kitchen, Martinek went into another room to have a final talk with his agent, Don Henderson. When he emerged a bit later and told his family he had signed …

It was wonderful to see all the kids out having fun before, during and after the competition. I was amazed by the sense of community these youngsters demonstrated. Plenty of talent right here in Hopatcong. Access to such activities for kids pays handsome dividends. Little League, Warriors Football, etc. You Rock!   more ›
